ABSTRACT

Crustose coralline algae (Corallinophycideae) are red algae that produced calcium carbonate and are well recognized as foundation species in the epipelagic zone of the marine ecosystem. These algae induced settlement juvenile of coral by released chemical cues from bacterial communities on the surface of their colonies. Their extracellular calcium carbonate also can stabilize reef structure that influencing many invertebrate attaches and growth in the seabed. Crustose coralline algae (CCA) have obtained attention because of their distribution and health compromise to increasing seawater temperature, ocean acidification, and pollutant. As a cryptic species in the ecosystem, the presence of CCA recruit sometimes doesn’t have attention, especially on their capability to occupy the empty space. This study aimed to document coverage and number of CCA recruit in two different recruitment tile’s material. The highest CCA percentage of the cover was showed inside surface than others surface in all stations. Light intensity and low sedimentation were suggested as a key factor of success of high coverage. Overall, station higher CCA recruits have shown from Tiga Warna. Low sedimentation and protection from aerial exposure became the main reason for it. No significant difference number of CCA recruits between marble and sandstone in this study. Successful CCA recruitment in this study can give a wide picture that natural recruitment of coral and other reef biodiversity in Southern Malang might be will succeed because of the abundance of coralline algae that support their life history stage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The present study evaluated the profile of endoglin (CD105) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) based on staging and histopathological grading of colorectal cancer as well as their relationship with bevacizumab therapy. Methods: A total of 88 cases of colorectal adenocarcinoma were included in the present study. The levels of VEGF and CD105 protein were evaluated with enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: There was a significant difference in the level of CD105 (p=0.002) between metastases and non-metastases subjects, showing that CD105 was higher in metastases subjects (4.59 ng/ml). Therewas no significant difference in the level of VEGF based on the presence of metastasis (p=0.625). There was a significant difference in the levels of CD105 (p=0.038) and VEGF (p=0.010) between the subjects who received chemotherapy and those who did not. The CD105 level was higher in the subjects who received chemotherapy (4.43 ng/ml); conversely, the level of VEGF was lower in subjects who received chemotherapy (543.65 pg/ml). There was a statistically significant difference in the levels of CD105 (p=0.003) and VEGF (p=0.002) between subjects who received bevacizumab therapy and subjects who did not. The levels of CD105 were higher in subjects who received bevacizumab therapy (5.11 ng/ml); in contrast, the level of VEGF was higher in subjects who did not receive bevacizumab therapy (645.92 pg/ml). There was a significant positive correlation between CD105 and VEGF in subjects who did not receive bevacizumab (p<0.01). Conclusion: The results of this study support a hypothesis of "escape mechanism" in the failure of anti-angiogenesis therapy (anti-VEGF). (AU)

(AU)

ABSTRACT

Despite the synergistic effect of Opisthorchis viverrini and Helicobacter pylori co-infection on pathogenesis of severe hepatobiliary abnormalities (HBA) including advanced periductal fibrosis and replace with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) have been established, the immune response to H. pylori in O. viverrini infected population has never been explored. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the antibody responses to 2 immunogenic H. pylori proteins in O. viverrini-infected patients with HBA and CCA. The risk analysis by multinomial logistic regression revealed that GroEL seropositivity was associated with higher risks of hepatobiliary abnormalities and CCA with adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 2.11 (95% CI=1.20-3.71, P=0.008) and 2.13 (95% CI=1.21-3.75, P=0.009), respectively. These findings indicate that GroEL seropositivity might be a biomarker for early detection of O. viverrini associated HBA and CCA.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Diabetic nephropathy is one of the most common complications in diabetes Mellitus. Hyperglycemia and chronic inflammation cause abnormal oxidative stress deposition that leads to the decrease of glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPx1) and endothelial Nitric Oxide synthetase (eNOS). It was reported that Centella asiatica has an anti-hyperglycemic and anti-inflammatory effect. However little is known about Centella asiatica effect in the kidney of DM. The objective of this study was to know the effect of Centella asiatica extract on Kim-1 (marker of kidney damage), GPx1 and eNOS mRNA expression in the kidney of DM rat model. Methods: Wistar DM rat model was divided into 6 groups namely non-DM group, DM group , DM with captopril and another DM group treated with Centella asiatica with three different dosages (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg BW). The treatment was given for 8 weeks. The Kim-1, GPx1 and eNOS expression was measured using semi-quantitative PCR. Results: The DM group showed higher Kim-1 kidney mRNA expression but lower GPx1 and eNOS kidney mRNA compare to those on the non-DM group. Administration of Centella asiatica improves the expression of Kim-1, GPx1 and eNOS kidney mRNA expression in DM rat model. Conclusion: Centella asiatica has the potential to prevent kidney damage in DM rat model by improving Kim-1, GPx1 and eNOS kidney mRNA expression.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: Dental caries in children is a major problem of mouth disease throughout the world, so too is there currently an increase in health problems in children due to obesity. Human Beta defensing(HBD) has been found in saliva and from several studies stated that HBD aside from being a broad-spectrum antimicrobial can act as an immunomodulator. The purpose of this study is to reveal whether there is a relationship between obesity and HBD-3 salivary concentration in caries patients and caries-free patients. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was involved 62 children with caries and caries-free, aged 9-11 years, students at Qommarudin Islamic Boarding School, Gresik, East Java Indonesia. dental caries examination, carried out in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) diagnostic criteria. Body mass index (BMI) was measured from the height and weight of individuals, HBD3 concentrations were tested with an ELISA kit from Bioassay Technology Laboratory (China) from saliva samples. Evaluate the results with the Kruskal Wallis test, followed by the Mann-Whitney test. The level of significance used in this statistical test was 0.05. Results: there was a relationship between BMI level and HBD-3 concentration in the caries group (p <0.05, p = 0.009) with a moderate level of association. but there was no significant relationship in the caries-free group (p> 0.05, p = 0.189). Conclusion: There was an association between BMI and HBD-3 salivary concentration in caries patients but there was no relationship in the caries-free group.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: To analyze angiogenesis in the post-extracted tooth of Wistar rats after application of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) extract. Material and Methods: A total of 18 rats were divided into two groups (control and treatment). Okra extract with a concentration of 30% in gel form was applied on the post-extraction socket of the treatment group. The rats were sacrificed on day-3, day-5, and day-7 after tooth extraction. The newly-formed blood vessels were counted and statistically analyzed by means of One Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD with a significance level set at 5%. Results: The newly-formed capillaries of the control group (4.67 ± 1.53) on day-3 were lower than the treatment group (9.00 ± 1.00). The newly-formed capillaries recorded from the control group, both in day-5 (9.33 ± 1.53) and day-7 (8.67 ± 1.53) were lower than the treatment group, which started to decreased from day-5 (13.67 ± 1.53) to day-7 (12.33 ± 0.58). Significant differences were found in treatment group, on day-3 compared to day-5 (p=0.005), and on day-3 to day-7 (p=0.024). Conclusion: Okra extract in gel form at 30% concentration can increase the angiogenesis during the wound healing process of the extracted tooth on Wistar rats.

ABSTRACT

Since before centuries, human tries hard to explore underwater and in 1940’s human-introduced an important and revolutionary gear i.e. scuba that allowed human-made long interaction in the underwater world. Since diving using pressure gas under pressure environment, it should be considered to remember gas law (Boyle’s law). The gas law gives a clear understanding of physiological consequences related to diving diseases such as barotrauma or condition in which tissue or organ is damage due to gas pressure. The organ which has direct effect related to compression and expansion of gas were lungs, ear, and sinus. These organs were common and potentially fatigue injury for a diver. In this article we shall review the history of scuba diving, physical stress caused underwater environment, physiology adaptation of lung, ear, and sinus, and diving disease.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, cohort, non-inferiority study. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the clinical and radiological outcomes of interbody fusion using a combination of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) and hydroxyapatite (HA). OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: The use of autografts remains a gold standard in lumbar interbody fusion, but the limited availability and donor site morbidity encourages the use of bone substitutes. In addition to autografts, a combination of HA and DBM is being increasingly use for lumbar interbody fusion. However, there are no data on the clinical and radiological outcomes of this procedure. METHODS: We examined 35 patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis who underwent transforaminal interbody fusion. Autografts were used in 18 patients, and 17 patients received a combination of HA and DBM. Clinical outcomes were evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) for back and leg pain, Oswestry disability index (ODI), and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Fusion was evaluated using computed tomography images obtained at 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The mean ODI, JOA, and back and leg pain VAS scores increased significantly in both groups. However, the VAS, JOA, and ODI scores did not differ significantly between the two groups (p=0.599, p=0.543, and p=0.780, respectively). The fusion rates at 1 year postoperatively were 77.8% and 76.5% in the autograft and HA+DBM groups, respectively (p=0.99). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical and radiological outcomes of using a combination of HA and DBM in lumbar interbody fusion were not inferior to those of using autografts. A combination of HA and DBM can be considered as an alternative in patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis requiring surgery.

ABSTRACT

To design custom-made prosthesis in a certain population, the morphometry needs to be measured. The results of this study were expected to provide basic data to design the ideal size of the total hip arthoplasty prosthesis for Indonesian population. This was an anthropometric study conducted on sex matched 100 healthy Indonesian mongoloid race subjects based on Computer Tomographic (CT) imaging on the proximal femur. The parameters being used in this study were Femoral Head Offset (FHO), Femoral Head Position (FHP), Femoral Head Diameter (FHD), Neck-Shaft Angle (NSA), Anteroposterior Width (APW) and Mediolateral Width at 3 different locations, and Canal Flare Index (CFI). This study showed that Indonesian has smaller proximal femur morphometry as compared to Western population. The mean value of all parameters in male were larger than female. Moreover, FHO and FHP showed significant difference among male and female indicating the location of male femoral head center lies superiorly as compared to female. The dimension of femoral canal was found to be mediolaterally oval, 1.43, 1.28, and 1,34, respectively, in 3 different cutting (20 mm above and 40 mm below lesser trochanter, and isthmus). CFI of Indonesian was classified to be stovepipe femoral canal (2.99) that is the suggestion to use cemented femoral stem. This study showed that Indonesian proximal femur dimension has smaller build compared with Western counterpart. The proposed dimensions can be used as the basic data to design the ideal size of the femoral stem for Indonesian population.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to design custom-made prosthesis in a certain population, the morphometry needs to be measured. The results of this study were expected to provide basic data to design the ideal size of the total knee arthoplasty prosthesis for Indonesian population. This was an anthropometric study conducted on 100 healthy Indonesian population based on Computer Tomographic (CT) imaging on the distal femur resected surface. The parameters being used were Femoral Medio Lateral (fML) length, Femoral Antero Posterior (fAP) length, Femoral Medial Antero Posterior (fMAP) length, Femoral Lateral Antero Posterior (fLAP) length, and Femoral Aspect Ratio (FR). We found that the mean fAP and fML were 54.60±5.71 and 65.98±6.51, respectively. The morphometry of the distal femur were significantly different between male and female (male have larger build), however one of parameters showed different result: fLAP. This study showed that Indonesian people have smaller build compared with their Western counterpart. The proposed dimensions can be used as the basic data to design the ideal size of the custom-made knee arthoplasty prosthesis for Indonesian population.
